Partnerships in the Art Studio
An art class tailored for the senior residents of Inver Glen happens monthly within the preschool studio. Without fail, a grandma enters the room and asks, "Where are the children?" Despite class descriptions emphasizing an adult-focused experience, (which we thought would be a draw), they want the kids!
The perfect compromise has been to invite preschoolers in at the outset. Their uninhibited enthusiasm sets the tone, as they eagerly share painting ideas, favorite colors, and offer endearing “assistance.” The studio energy rises, setting a playful atmosphere - perfect for putting any hesitant seniors at ease - and the creativity begins.
Toward the session's conclusion, children rejoin to admire the artwork and offer earnest feedback, sometimes amusingly candid. “Your cat looks more like a horse,” mixed with “Good job,” and “I love it so much!” Seniors, often modest in accepting praise from adults, find joy and humor in the children’s admiration. They proudly discuss their creations, even promising to hang their work on their refrigerators!
Through these exchanges of encouragement, the seniors and children find common ground, reminding us all to keep creating no matter which stage we are at.
